A large mural by local artist Danielle Farrington created to hide a persistent graffiti spot on garages located in Ysgurbowen has been unveiled.
Danielle approached garage owners Monmouthshire Housing Association (MHA) to offer to undertake the artwork free of charge after getting fed up with the vandalism, which she has to walk past daily with her young son.
The Mayor of Abergavenny, Councillor Chris Holland; Leader of the Council, Councillor Mary Ann Brocklesby and Councillor Martyn Groucutt, along with Monmouthshire Housing Association’s Neighbourhood Officer Teri Power visited Ysgurborwen to view the mural and meet Danielle.
Danielle has already received lots of compliments for her artwork.
She said:
“I have created a simple yet slightly edgy design that I hope might appeal to the teenagers that hang about around the garages”.
“I personally dislike this wall and am a firm believer of the “broken window theory”. I have faith that with the new artwork it should encourage more respect, which has always been the case with my other murals across the town, as opposed to perpetuating the constant vandalism,.”
“A mural like this would normally cost in the region of £1,250 due to the time taken and its size.”
“It was a good opportunity to add a little bit of colour, a little bit of life, something for everybody to be proud of here… because it is a great area”.
“I have utilised paints I have left over from previous jobs, so all I am losing is my time, which I am happy to give as a gift to my end of town.”

Cllr Martyn Groucutt, Cabinet Member for Education and Landsdown Ward Member for Monmouthshire County Council said:
“This mural that Danielle has created is fantastic. A great addition to Abergavenny’s creative culture. It has transformed an ordinary wall into something everyone can be proud of.”
Michele Morgan, MHA Director of Housing & Communities said,
“We would like to say a big thank you to Danielle for generously gifting her time and using her immense talent to helping MHA combat vandalism, which can become a blight on our communities”.
“Danielle has taken what has become an unsightly wall and transformed it into something vibrant and eye-catching, which should not only put a smile on people’s faces but hopefully act as a deterrent for potential vandalism”.
Danielle’s works of art can be viewed across Abergavenny – they can be found in Bailey Park, Seven Corners and the bus station.
