We are very happy to award TogetherWORKS Community Hub £3,000 of our ‘Pitch for your Project’ community funding towards a community freezer.
With the rising cost of living impacting many local communities, TogetherWORKS Community Hub identified a need for a community freezer stocked with affordable, nutritious meals to tackle food poverty and waste. MHA’s PFYP supported the acquisition of the community freezer, which is now packed with low-cost, high-quality meals, for all the community to enjoy – stocked five days a week!
Rachel Knight, Engagement and Partnerships Manager MHA said:
The community freezer project epitomises the purpose of MHA’s PYFP; it fosters cohesion and strengthens the community by offering local people access to affordable, sustainable meals. Not only does it benefit MHA tenants and the wider community, but it also gives local shops and people an opportunity to alleviate food waste by donating food items to be used in the freezer recipes.
The freezer is open for walk-in’s during the hub’s current opening hours, and available to everyone in the community. All meals are prepared at TogetherWORKS’ kitchen by a volunteer chef, using food kindly donated by local shops and people to reduce food waste. The freezer is stocked with a plethora of meals, including vegetarian and vegan options, so there is something for everyone!
The meals are priced at £3 each, however, if people are facing financial hardship, they pay what they can afford. The freezer has been established to support the community and each payment helps the freezer remain stocked for others.
‘Pitch For Your Project’ is MHA’s grant scheme, where once a year community groups and projects that are passionate about building resilient communities and having a positive impact on MHA tenants can apply for a share of £12,000.
TogetherWORKS, a partnership between GAVO and MCC, is a not-for-profit, community-driven hub, funded by UK Government Levelling Up Fund.
